What is handball?

Handball is a team sport in which two teams of seven players each (six outcourt players and a goalkeeper) pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the opposing team. A standard match consists of two periods of 30 minutes, and the team that scores more goals wins.

The history of handball

Handball has a long and diverse history, dating back to ancient times. Some of the earliest forms of handball were played in Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, Japan, and Persia. However, the modern version of handball was developed in Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The first official rules were published in 1917 by Karl Schelenz, Max Heiser, and Erich Konigh in Berlin, Germany. The first international matches were played in 1925 (men) and 1930 (women), and handball became an Olympic sport in 1936 (men) and 1976 (women). Today, handball is governed by the International Handball Federation (IHF), which has 197 member federations as of 2016.

The rules of handball

Handball is played on a court of 40 by 20 metres (131 by 66 ft), with a goal in the middle of each end. The goals are surrounded by a 6-metre (20 ft) zone where only the defending goalkeeper is allowed; goals must be scored by throwing the ball from outside the zone or while "diving" into it.

The court and the equipment

The court is divided into two halves by a center line, and has a free-throw line at 9 metres (30 ft) from each goal. There are also penalty marks at 7 metres (23 ft) from each goal, where penalty throws are taken after certain fouls. The court has different colored areas to indicate different zones and lines.

The ball is made of leather or synthetic material, and has a circumference of 58-60 cm (23-24 in) for men and 54-56 cm (21-22 in) for women. The ball weighs 425-475 g (15-17 oz) for men and 325-375 g (11-13 oz) for women. The ball must be able to bounce properly on the floor.

The goals are 3 metres (10 ft) wide and 2. The goals are 3 metres (10 ft) wide and 2 metres (6.6 ft) high, and have a net to catch the ball. The goals are placed on the outer edge of the goal line. The goal posts and the crossbar must be painted in two contrasting colors, usually white and red.

The players and the positions

Each team consists of 14 players, of whom 7 are on the court at any one time. The players wear numbered shirts from 1 to 20, and must wear the same color as their teammates. The players can be substituted at any time during the game, without notifying the referee.

The players are divided into two types: outcourt players and goalkeeper. The outcourt players are further divided into four positions: center back, left and right back, and left and right wing. The center back is the playmaker of the team, who organizes the attack and directs the other players. The left and right back are the main shooters of the team, who try to score from long distance or penetrate the defense. The left and right wing are the fastest players of the team, who try to score from the sides or assist the other players. The goalkeeper is the last line of defense, who tries to stop the shots from the opponents.

The scoring and the fouls

A goal is scored when the ball crosses the goal line completely, either in the air or on the ground. A goal can be scored from any part of the court, except from inside the 6-metre zone of the opponents. A goal can also be disallowed for various reasons, such as an infringement by the attacking team, a faulty ball, or an external interference.

A foul is an illegal action by a player that interferes with the play or endangers another player. Some common fouls are: holding, hitting, pushing, tripping, charging, or kicking an opponent; touching or crossing the goal line or the 6-metre zone as an outcourt player; holding or playing the ball for more than 3 seconds; taking more than 3 steps without dribbling; dribbling again after stopping; or touching the ball with any part of the body below the knee.

The referee can penalize a foul by awarding a free throw, a penalty throw, a yellow card, a 2-minute suspension, or a red card to the offender. A free throw is taken from where A free throw is taken from where the foul occurred, unless it was inside the 9-metre line of the opponents, in which case it is taken from the nearest point on the line. A free throw can be taken quickly or after a whistle by the referee. A penalty throw is taken from the 7-metre mark, with only the goalkeeper defending. A penalty throw is awarded for a foul that prevents a clear scoring chance, or for a deliberate foul inside the 6-metre zone. A yellow card is a warning to a player for unsportsmanlike conduct, and can be given only once to each player. A 2-minute suspension is a temporary exclusion of a player from the game, and can be given for repeated or serious fouls. A red card is a permanent expulsion of a player from the game, and can be given for very severe or violent fouls, or for receiving three 2-minute suspensions.
